Built to help women have a 360° approach to health through perimenopause to post-menopause.
Menstrual migraines can have a profound impact on a woman’s daily life, hindering her ability to function normally. When addressing this issue in clinical settings, a thorough assessment and case history are conducted. However, one of the key factors in determining the underlying cause is pinpointing the timing of migraines in the woman’s menstrual cycle. Migraines can be influenced by fluctuations in oestrogen levels, whether they are high, low, or erratic, as well as low progesterone levels.
Hormonal headaches and migraines are particularly prevalent when oestrogen levels are high and progesterone levels are relatively low, which often occurs during perimenopause. Consequently, menstrual migraines are more frequently experienced by women between the ages of 40 and 55.
The link between high oestrogen levels and migraines lies in the stimulation of immune cells to produce higher amounts of prostaglandins and histamine. This process can lead to inflammation and pain. Moreover, elevated histamine levels might result in additional symptoms like hives or itchy skin, not solely limited to migraines.
Fluctuations in oestrogen levels can lead to a sudden withdrawal, disrupting the balance of neurotransmitters serotonin and glutamate, which may contribute to migraine episodes.
For those who experience migraines during ovulation, it could be attributed to a condition called oestrogen dominance, wherein high oestrogen levels outweigh progesterone levels. Addressing this hormonal imbalance and promoting oestrogen detoxification can effectively alleviate migraines. Additionally, the use of natural antihistamines may help reduce histamine levels associated with high oestrogen.
Furthermore, sudden drops in both oestrogen and progesterone levels just before or during menstruation can also trigger migraines. Therefore, restoring hormonal balance and supporting detoxification processes can prove beneficial in managing such migraines.
NATURAL APPROACHES TO ALLEVIATE HORMONAL MIGRAINES
Magnesium: This essential mineral has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. By stabilizing serotonin receptors, reducing inflammation, and preventing the release of pain-promoting neurotransmitters, magnesium can offer relief. Combining magnesium with taurine, a calming amino acid, has shown promise in preventing migraines. These beneficial components can be found in my PCH Magnesium Complex.
Bioidentical Progesterone: Taking bioidentical progesterone during the two weeks leading up to the menstrual period has proven effective in managing hormonal migraines. It is available in the form of BIHRT compound or Utrogestan capsules.
It’s worth noting that hormonal birth control does not contain progesterone, as contraceptive drugs use progestins, which lack the same migraine-reducing effect.
Vitamin B2 and B12: Vitamin B2 helps normalize serotonin production and enhances the function of the MTHFR enzyme, which has been linked to migraines. Meanwhile, vitamin B12 may help reduce the severity of migraines. These vitamins can be found in my B12 and B Complex supplements.
5htp: Found in my Mood & Sleep supplement, 5htp supports serotonin production and can reduce sensitivity to pain, potentially offering relief from migraines.
Gluten-Free Diet: Studies have shown that a gluten-free diet has eliminated migraines in 89 percent of participants. One possible mechanism is that gluten sensitivity triggers an autoimmune reaction against the enzyme (glutamate decarboxylase) responsible for converting glutamate to GABA, leading to high glutamate levels, which may be associated with migraines.
Lastly, it’s essential to note that all types of hormonal birth control can worsen migraines, so it’s crucial to explore alternative options if migraines are a concern.
Understanding how hormones impact migraines is crucial for finding effective relief and managing these debilitating episodes that can disrupt daily life. By addressing hormonal imbalances through natural approaches and lifestyle changes, many women can experience significant improvement in their migraines and overall well-being.
