However, one of the key factors in determining the underlying cause is pinpointing the timing of migraines in the woman’s menstrual cycle. Migraines can be influenced by fluctuations in oestrogen levels, whether they are high, low, or erratic, as well as low progesterone levels.
Hormonal headaches and migraines are particularly prevalent when oestrogen levels are high and progesterone levels are relatively low, which often occurs during perimenopause. Consequently, menstrual migraines are more frequently experienced by women between the ages of 40 and 55.
The link between high oestrogen levels and migraines lies in the stimulation of immune cells to produce higher amounts of prostaglandins and histamine. This process can lead to inflammation and pain.
