Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that ignites drive and motivation, enhances attention, boosts energy, elevates cognitive function, stimulates creativity, and elicits a pleasant feeling.
However, the widespread problem of low dopamine and “dopamine burnout” is a significant and growing concern. Regrettably, people are seeking dopamine in all the wrong places. Short-term dopamine spikes from sources such as sweets, social media, drugs, alcohol, and constant stimulation can lead a person to rely on these substances to achieve more dopamine rushes.
Unfortunately, this can lead to dependence and the need for more dopamine over time, resulting in dopamine depletion. Low dopamine levels can contribute to fatigue, lack of motivation, loss of interest in life, mood swings, low sex drive, insomnia, negative mood, depression, and anxiety.
Dopamine burnout is incredibly prevalent, but the solution is to limit the use of the above sources of dopamine and instead search for dopamine in the right places:
