Built to help women have a 360° approach to health through perimenopause to post-menopause.
If you have ever gone on a diet, you know what it feels like to feel obligated to regulate yourself at every move. You keep telling yourself phrases such as “I must do this…”, “I should/shouldn’t do this…”, “I have to do this…”, “ I can’t do this…”, etc. These phrases have such a tight hold on you that you feel compelled to follow them every time.
We also know what it feels like to keep running away from certain fears. These fears are often amplified by our own minds. These fears include being overweight, feeling self-conscious, and not feeling enough for anyone, especially for our significant others.
Because of these factors, going on a diet is more like an obligation rather than a personal choice that we made to improve ourselves. This also makes diets feel more like a punishment rather than a personal lifestyle choice.
With this, we end up having to choose between two things that we think are both punishments. Either we work hard to exercise or we restrict and discipline ourselves to diet. On the other hand, what this makes us realize is that sometimes we don’t actually want to change our diet or the way we live. Instead, we are feeling obligated to do so or are only running away from our fears.
So if we want to make dieting feel more like our personal choice rather than an obligation or punishment, we must take some necessary steps.
The first step would be your motivation doesn’t come from pleasing other people. Instead, it should be coming from your own motivation to help improve yourself in terms of your health and fitness. Having to rely on others’ approval for motivation can only sabotage yourself in the long run.
Furthermore, having to rely on others’ approval for motivation can do more harm than good. Some of these habits can be being emotional about the topic of weight loss, constantly analyzing our scale, and being willing to follow extremely unhealthy diet methods. Not only that, but our self-esteem takes a dive for the worse as well.
Even if we do lose weight from this method, we will still feel like we aren’t adequate enough, or that we haven’t done enough for ourselves. When this happens, all the way that we’ve lost comes back again in just a short span of time.
This is why we must build the foundation of self-confidence and knowing our self-worth. These will be essential in making sure our weight loss journey is founded on the idea of loving ourselves and knowing what we are worthy of.
Another thing we can do is to make it as clear as possible for ourselves what we really want to achieve. In short, we must have a vision for ourselves.
This vision will make it clear what exactly we want for ourselves instead of what most people do – which is to just list down everything they don‘t want to be.
These can be things such as not wanting to be fat, not wanting to feel unwanted, I don’t want to get cancer or make me diabetic, or not wanting to feel like they lack control over themselves. As we have mentioned before, this only creates fear. When we are motivated by fear, we find it really hard to enjoy the process of weight loss.
Therefore, if we want to lose weight more effectively, we must love the process of losing weight and achieving our vision for ourselves. We must be filled with passion, commitment, and motivation to become better versions of ourselves. Not just because we are running away from our fears or we feel obligated to do so.
We must be motivated by the idea of all the possibilities we can achieve when we have a healthy weight and lifestyle. These will be our motivation in order to go through our diet more sustainably. When we are in love with every version of ourselves, and when we enjoy the process of making ourselves better, then it becomes more sustainable and longer lasting.
The bottom line, we must not be motivated by fear or a sense of obligation in order to lose weight. Instead, we must have a solid foundation of loving ourselves and being more self-confident, while also being motivated by the version of ourselves that we want to achieve.
Only by doing these things can we make sure that we are truly in love with the process of losing weight and changing our lifestyles for the better. This will also make diets feel more like our personal choice rather than something that is imposed on us as a punishment.
If you are sick and tired of struggling with your weight or a poor relationship with food and you know this is holding you back in all areas of your life – this is for you!
Much love
