Built to help women have a 360° approach to health through perimenopause to post-menopause.
With our media being flooded with people with a seemingly perfect physiques, it can get quite hard to find ourselves beautiful. From television to Instagram, we are bombarded by messages telling us how this person has the perfect body and how we can be like them. This applies to both men and women, but it’s more prevalent and less subtle for women.
Body changes are a familiar symptom of midlife for many of us and this can take a toll on our self-confidence especially if we aren’t fit enough to fit in what they call “perfect” bodies. This is why you’ll often find women suffering from body dysmorphia, low confidence, eating disorders, and other mental health issues. Everywhere we go, these beauty standards are perpetuated and it has become what is “normal” for all of us. So much so that if you don’t achieve it, then you’re missing out on a lot of opportunities.
If you have ever felt like this, don’t worry because the perfect body does not exist. Now you may be wondering why, but there are plenty of reasons why we think the perfect body exists even when it doesn’t.
The first reason as mentioned before is the media we consume. In our society, we often see flawless-looking models in magazines, commercials, and even on TV shows. However, the reality is that barely any one of them looks like this on a daily basis!
Another thing you have to keep in mind is that a lot of these models, influencers, actors, and actresses tend to have their pictures touched up too before they ever share it in public. Some also just know how to take pictures of themselves in the right angles and lighting. So yes, those people who seem perfect or ideal, may not be so flawless at all in real life.
In addition, you must also remember that beauty products tend to make you think that there’s a problem so you’ll buy their “Solution”. How will they do that? By exploiting your emotions and making you feel insecure, of course. They will make you feel bad about your weight so they can sell you their weight loss programs and pills.
It may be hard to “Unlearn” the biases these companies have taught us over the years, but it’s totally possible!
Accepting ourselves does not happen overnight, and we can’t magically wish away all of our biggest insecurities. However, we simply have to take the first step and handle things one by one. Being consistent in appreciating what we see in front of the mirror instead of degrading and insulting ourselves is a good way to make ourselves feel better.
Furthermore, knowing that we are not alone in this world can also ease some of our worries. You simply have to know that out of all the people in the world, even those we consider the most beautiful also have negative things to say about their own bodies. They too worry about their weight, their height, their shape, and everything else just like you.
The bottomline is that everyone is different. No one body shape in the world is going to be universally beautiful or accepted. People across cultures have their own standards for what they deem to be aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, it’s pointless to rave about an ideal or perfect body as it never existed. What would be perfect or ideal though is us appreciating who we are and working with what we have to make a better version of ourselves instead of chasing an illusion perpetuated by our society.
