The concept of Adrenal Fatigue is frequently mentioned, but practitioners refer to it as HPA axis dysfunction, emphasising the interconnections between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands. Scientific research supports the existence of HPA axis dysfunction, with over 4000 papers available for reference.
Whole Body Approach:
A holistic perspective, Functional Medicine advocates for addressing the interconnected web of the body, rather than isolating specific parts. Treating the body as a whole is key to comprehensive well-being.
These are intricately connected, forming the focus of my specialised training. The brain signals the adrenals to release hormones, and both the adrenals and thyroid collaborate in hormone production. The brain influences the thyroid, and prolonged stress can interrupt cortisol production. Elevated cortisol prompts a feedback loop, affecting both thyroid hormone and brain signalling. Stress hormones impact thyroid hormone conversion, and symptoms like fatigue may stem from dysfunction in the brain, thyroid, adrenals, or a combination of factors. It’s essential to consider the interconnected nature of the body rather than isolating one part.
